Quick answer

GeraRide offers NTSA-compliant cab and boda rides across Kenya with M-Pesa checkout, KSh fares displayed before you book, and coverage from Nairobi to Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret.

Regulation: NTSA and the Transport Licensing Act

Ride-hailing in Kenya is regulated by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) under the Transport Network Companies (TNC) regulations. GeraRide drivers must hold a valid driving licence with a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) endorsement for cars, a valid PSV insurance policy, a Certificate of Good Conduct, and NTSA inspection. Boda riders must hold category A2/A3 licences, NTSA-compliant SACCO membership, and a reflective jacket with number plate displayed. Data is handled under the Data Protection Act 2019 with ODPC registration.

Fares in KSh

  • Base fare (cab, Nairobi): KSh 120
  • Per-kilometre: KSh 25
  • Per-minute: KSh 4
  • Minimum cab fare: KSh 250
  • Boda (fixed urban): KSh 80–300 typical trip
  • Airport (JKIA → Westlands): KSh 1,500–2,200

Fares are quoted up-front and locked for cash / M-Pesa trips. Surge multipliers are capped at 1.8× per NTSA guidance and always disclosed before booking.

M-Pesa payment flow

Default: M-Pesa STK push at trip end. The driver receives payment directly to their M-Pesa number minus the GeraRide service fee. Airtel Money, T-Kash, and cash are also accepted. Card (Visa/Mastercard) for corporate accounts and tourists.

Competitive landscape

Uber, Bolt, Little (Safaricom), Faras, and Wasili are the main competitors in Kenya. GeraRide's differentiators: lower driver commission (15% vs. 18–25% on incumbents), transparent surge cap aligned with NTSA guidance, native boda + cab in one app, and cross-product loyalty through GeraCoins (e.g. a KSh 500 GeraClinic credit for every 20 rides).

Safety

Every driver and rider goes through NTSA-record verification and a Certificate of Good Conduct check. SOS button dials 999 and shares live location with GeraRide safety desk. Drivers' PSV badge and SACCO details are shown in-app before the trip starts.
